"I wrote you last on the first instant, as in copy enclosed,

about Reies's perplexing attitude and the

harter of a vessel to carry a cargo to Hongkong and Whampoa, the fi-

nance of which I had to accept (for reasons stated), although a settle- ment with Reiss is still pending in regard to their continuing the busi- ness after the 30th. June next,

The following day, the Texas Company wrote confirming this charter, asking me officially to open the usual credit, and I now en- close a copy on their letter together with my reply thereto of the fol- lowing day

the 3rd instant.

As you will note, I made a point of writing them that your

Bank was the most suitable one for this business, as to which I beg

to refer you to what I wrote on page 11 of my letter of the 21st ultimo under FINANCE.

I am glad to say that up to the time of writing the Texas

very punctilious though it is generally has not pressed me

for this credit which, under our contract, we are obliged to furnish them with before the vessel starts louding; and the "fanored" is loading
